7 Ways to Overcome Burnout:

89% of Americans had burnout in the last year.

I faced burnout last fall after getting sick 3 times within 2 months.

It was difficult to keep up with my classes since I lacked motivation. I spent a lot of time reading Reddit posts on Instagram when I should have been doing homework.

Here are some techniques I used to overcome burnout.

1) Know the signs

While burnout looks different for each person, these are some common symptoms.

  • Anxiety

  • Reduced performance

  • Fatigue

  • Low mood

  • Cynicism

  • Lack of creativity

  • Detachment

  • Forgetfulness

2) Seek support

My parents flew out to California from Texas because I was depressed. After spending a few days with them and family friends I've known for years, I felt much better.

The change of scenery I experienced from leaving my college campus also helped me.

3) Maintain a healthy lifestyle

When I had burnout, I tried to continue eating healthy foods, engaging in less intense exercise like yoga and walking, and prioritizing sleep.

These actions aided in keeping my energy levels up and maintaining a sense of normalcy.

4) Reframe your view of work

By taking some time away from my college campus and homework, I was able to reset.

I also thought about the value I find in my classes. For example, I enjoyed learning about economics and crime.

5) Take breaks

I started using the Pomodoro technique more often since it has built-in breaks.

On Fridays, I tend to do very little homework so that I have a rest day from academics.

6) Reevaluate your priorities

My experience with burnout prompted me to focus more on spending time with my friends and attending activities on my college campus.

I still make sure to do homework and study for my classes, but I also remind myself that an important part of college is having fun and building life-long friendships.

7) Find positivity

After I got burnout, I wanted to add some more positivity to my life.

I started using positive affirmations and gratitude journaling to improve my mood.
